One finger, and the Arctic begins at the edge of the table. The Folkmanis mini narwhal finger puppet shows the polar animal whose long protruding tooth earned it the name unicorn of the sea. Small enough for a coat pocket, big enough for a whole story.
Narwhal tusks reached medieval Europe through trade, and nobody there knew which animal had produced them. They passed as unicorn horns, were weighed against gold and were credited with neutralising poison in a drinking cup. Elizabeth I received one as a gift, and the Danish coronation throne at Rosenborg Castle is still built from narwhal tusks today. Only in the seventeenth century did Arctic whalers reveal the true source, bringing a highly profitable trade to an end.
Did you know that narwhals grow paler with age? Calves arrive almost uniformly grey, adults carry a mottled pattern, and very old males are close to white. The back of a narwhal therefore gives a rough reading of its years.
