Folkmanis Mini Praying Mantis Finger Puppet

As oversized insects go, this one definitely uses her power for good, not evil. Devout, humble and helpful, she will crusade against garden pests with righteous wrath and never harm a hair on your head. This praying mantis puppet comes to life when you wear her on your finger.

Mantises (Mantodea) run to more than two thousand species, most of them in warm parts of the world. The praying posture comes from the folded raptorial forelegs, two spined grabbing arms that shoot out from ambush in a few hundredths of a second. The triangular head sits on such a mobile neck that the insect can look back over its own body, while widely spaced compound eyes give it depth of vision. Disguised as a leaf, a twig or a flower, a mantis waits motionless for flies, grasshoppers and moths. Eggs are laid in a foam parcel that dries on twigs and walls into a tough case.

Did you know that a mantis has a single ear, set in the middle of its underside between the hind legs? It is tuned to ultrasound and picks up hunting bats. A mantis in flight that catches such a call rolls sideways and spirals steeply down to the ground.
