The bare prehensile tail assists climbing, and each hind foot carries a spreading toe that grips like a thumb. The young are born tiny after barely two weeks and grow on inside the mother's pouch.
Did you know that opossums are largely unaffected by the venom of many snakes? Their blood carries a protein that neutralises venom components, and research groups are studying it as a basis for new antivenoms. Rabies is rare in them too, because their low body temperature gives the virus little room.
