The pretty Blue Morpho Butterfly Folkmanis finger puppet soars on enchanting wings. With your finger in the body of this graceful creature you can flap the wings gently and bring out the lifelike pattern on the underside of the luxurious satin fabric.
Blue morpho butterflies (genus Morpho) live in the rainforests of Central and South America and fly low over clearings and stream beds. Adults feed on fermenting fallen fruit, tree sap and fungi rather than on flowers. The caterpillars chew the leaves of legumes and carry tufts of red and brown hair. Closed, the wings show a brown underside with large eyespots that hides the insect among dead leaves. Males patrol a set beat along the water and see off rivals.
Did you know that not one speck of blue pigment sits in a morpho wing? Microscopic ridges on the scales split the light so that only the blue part is thrown back. Viewed from the side, the very same wing shifts towards violet.
