The train is made up of greatly elongated upper tail coverts, some 150 feathers carrying the familiar eyespots, and it rests on the short, plain true tail feathers underneath. Every year, once the courting season ends, the whole train is shed and grows back in time for the following spring. A young cock needs several seasons before his finery reaches full length, though that rarely stops him from displaying in the meantime.
Did you know that a peacock’s colours owe nothing to pigment? The feather barbs hold minute crystal lattices that reflect certain wavelengths and cancel others, which is why the shade shifts as you move around the bird. While the fan is raised, the cock also shivers the feathers, producing a faint rustle that keeps the hens watching.
