In other amphibians the change is triggered by a thyroid hormone that the axolotl lacks, and biologists call this staying-young condition neoteny. Wild animals are dark and mottled for camouflage; the pale and jet-black varieties come from breeding lines. A full-grown axolotl reaches roughly 25 centimetres.
Did you know that an axolotl can rebuild a lost leg completely, with bone, muscle and nerves, and leave no scar behind? Parts of the heart, the retina and even the spinal cord can be replaced in the same way. That is why few animals are watched as closely in regeneration research.
