Native to Mexico and known as little “water monsters,” axolotls are curious creatures. Dark hues of purple with fuchsia accents and a movable head distinguish the Folkmanis Black Axolotl puppet. Learn about this amazing amphibian up close and personal with this extraordinary plush plaything.
Unlike frogs or newts, the axolotl never leaves the water. Its body holds on to the larval form for life: the six feathery gill stalks stay, so does the fin along the back, and the lungs develop only partly. In other amphibians the change is triggered by a thyroid hormone that the axolotl lacks, and biologists call this staying-young condition neoteny. Wild animals are dark and mottled for camouflage; the pale and jet-black varieties come from breeding lines. A full-grown axolotl reaches roughly 25 centimetres.
Did you know that an axolotl can rebuild a lost leg completely, with bone, muscle and nerves, and leave no scar behind? Parts of the heart, the retina and even the spinal cord can be replaced in the same way. That is why few animals are watched as closely in regeneration research.
