Rattlesnakes (Crotalus) carry a small pit between the eye and the nostril on each side of the head, and that pit responds to heat. It gives the rattlesnake a rough thermal picture of its surroundings, enough to find a mouse in complete darkness. The forked tongue gathers scent particles from the air and delivers them to two sensory patches in the roof of the mouth. That is how the animal works out which way a trail leads. It has no outer ears at all; ground vibrations reach it through the lower jaw.
