Soaring in to capture the imagination is the compact sized Small Snowy Owl puppet. Large expressive eyes with a rotating head and custom printed soft boa fabric give life to this beautiful arctic owl.
The snowy owl is the heaviest owl in North America, with the largest birds approaching three kilograms. Males grow steadily whiter with age, while females and young birds keep dark barring, which is how the two are told apart in the field. Even the toes are thickly feathered, protection that counts for a great deal at temperatures far below freezing. The neck allows the head to turn around 270 degrees, a necessity because the huge eyes are fixed in their sockets and cannot swivel. Soft combs along the flight feathers break up the air, leaving the bird almost silent on the wing.
Did you know that snowy owls sometimes spend the winter out at sea? Tracking studies have followed birds that stayed for weeks on drifting pack ice, taking ducks and auks at the open leads. For all that time they were nowhere near land.
